Finding a life partner and building a marriage is one of the most significant journeys many people undertake. It involves more than just love; it requires understanding, support, growth, and commitment. Marriage offers many benefits that enrich life emotionally, financially, and socially. Yet, the path to a lasting partnership is filled with challenges that couples must navigate together. This post explores the advantages of marriage, what people look for in a spouse, common reasons marriages face difficulties, and how to build a healthy relationship. Finally, it offers practical steps to become a great partner through personal development.

"God did not design us to be along. He created marriage to bring two individuals into one. Therefore, you cannot continue to be an individual."
Benefits of Marriage
Marriage brings many advantages that go beyond the romantic connection. These benefits often create a strong foundation for a fulfilling life together. In fact, love is not enough. A marriage must be built on many other elements to ensure it lasts for a lifetime. Read our article on Love is Not Enough in a Relationship
Emotional Advantages
Marriage provides emotional support and companionship. Sharing life’s ups and downs with a trusted partner can reduce stress and increase happiness. Studies show married people often report higher levels of emotional well-being and lower rates of depression compared to those who are single. Research shows that married couples live roughly 10 years longer than single individuals.
Financial Advantages
Pooling resources in marriage can lead to better financial stability. Couples can share expenses, save for future goals, and benefit from tax advantages. Joint financial planning often helps partners build wealth more effectively than when managing finances alone. Research shows that married couples create significantly more wealth than single individuals.
Social Advantages
Marriage often strengthens social ties. Couples tend to build a supportive network of family and friends, which can improve social life and provide a sense of belonging. Being married also offers social recognition and can create opportunities for shared community involvement.
Support Advantages
Marriage can help ensure goals are met and that neither spouse carries the load alone. There is a lot of debate on social media about whether couples should expect 50/50 in a relationship. Michele Obama once said that 50/50 doesn’t work. The reason is simple. Each day brings its own challenges, and one spouse may be overwhelmed, frustrated, or burnt out and cannot do their fair share that day. The other spouse, according to Michele Obama, must pick up the slack and do 70%. Tomorrow, the roles are reversed, so each spouse must be willing to be flexible to support the other with whatever is required on any given day. That flexibility applies to housework, parenting, cooking, and other responsibilities.

What People Typically Seek in a Future Spouse
Choosing a spouse is a deeply personal decision, but many look for similar qualities that contribute to a strong partnership. In fact, couples who have been married for decades offer similar advice on long-lasting relationships.
Shared Values
Having aligned values is crucial. Whether it’s about family, religion, money, or life priorities, shared values help couples make decisions together and avoid conflicts over fundamental beliefs. While dating, ask plenty of questions to ensure your values align. Make sure the other person handles children well if that’s your desire. Don’t take their word for it; watch them for the true answer. If one likes to spend a lot of money, that might be a red flag for your financial future. Read our article on Vision Board: Your Future.
Compatibility
Compatibility goes beyond shared interests and being in love. It includes emotional connection, communication styles, and how partners handle conflict. Couples who understand and respect each other’s personalities tend to build stronger bonds. I believe that each spouse must value and appreciate the other’s differences and take responsibility for adjusting to those differences, rather than forcing the other to change. No one wants someone to agree with everything they say or keep quiet when they disagree. Differences build a better relationship when you appreciate that your spouse has something you don’t have.
Shared Goals
Looking toward the future together is important. Couples who agree on goals such as career ambitions, family planning, and lifestyle choices are more likely to stay united and motivated as a team. Just because you get married doesn’t mean individual goals should be put aside. You should discuss aligned marital goals and plan how you will achieve them together with a joint plan. Individual goals that cannot be combined must be supported. It’ ok if one spouse wants to start a business and the other doesn’t. However, both must support each other’s dreams and aspirations. Top Three Reasons Couples Often Face Divorce
Despite the best intentions, many marriages face challenges that can lead to separation. Understanding common pitfalls can help couples work proactively to avoid them.
Communication Issues
Poor communication is a leading cause of marital breakdown. When couples stop sharing feelings, avoid difficult conversations, or misunderstand each other, resentment can build. Healthy communication involves active listening, expressing needs clearly, and resolving conflicts respectfully. Not one like a lot of arguing in a relationship. Therefore, each person must acquire the skills necessary to listen effectively and communicate with a purpose. I recommend that each spouse take a class on effective listening and negotiation skills so their communication goes from arguing to cooperating.
Financial Stress
Money problems create tension in many marriages. Differences in spending habits, debt, or financial insecurity can cause arguments and erode trust. Couples who openly discuss finances and plan together tend to manage stress better. And don’t forget to teach your children financial literacy and include them in your budget conversations. And remember, you are one now, and that means the money belongs to you both. Stop with the separate bills and individual checking accounts. Separate accounts simply means you are not yet fully committed to being together forever.

Infidelity
Betrayal through infidelity damages trust and often leads to divorce. Rebuilding trust after infidelity requires honesty, counseling, and a strong commitment to healing. Preventing infidelity involves maintaining emotional intimacy and addressing relationship issues early. But let’s be clear, there is no room in a marriage for infidelity. Each spouse must depend on the other to keep their promise and manage their emotions, no matter how hard it gets at times.

Essential Elements for a Healthy Marriage
Building a lasting marriage requires effort and attention to key elements of the relationship.
Trust
Trust is the foundation of any strong marriage. It grows from honesty, reliability, and keeping promises. Without trust, partners may feel insecure and distant. Remember that being quiet doesn’t build trust, but open communication does. Trust also means that issues within the marriage are never shared outside the marriage, period.
Respect
Respect means valuing each other’s boundaries, feelings, and opinions, especially when they differ from yours. It involves kindness, appreciation, and treating each other as equals.
Effective Communication
Good communication helps partners understand each other and solve problems together. It includes sharing thoughts openly, listening without judgment, and expressing appreciation regularly.

Steps for Personal Development to Become a Great Spouse
Becoming a supportive and loving partner starts with personal growth. You must start your training before you want to get married. It may take years to develop the skills needed for a long-term relationship, and having those skills is important for finding the right person for you. Far too many people meet a great person, fall in love, and get married. Although love keeps them going for the first couple of years, the other skills are required to keep you together beyond 10, 20, or 30 years. Read this article on Love is Not Enough in a Relationship to refresh yourself on the need to start your training when you are young. Here are practical ways to develop qualities that strengthen marriage.
Build Self-Awareness
Understand your emotions, triggers, and patterns. Self-awareness helps you respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Reflect on your strengths and areas for growth in relationships. Accept the baggage you bring from past relationships and think through how you will not allow those mistakes to affect your new relationship.
Practice Empathy
Try to see situations from your partner’s perspective. Empathy fosters connection and reduces conflicts. It means listening deeply and validating your partner’s feelings. Don’t develop assumptions about what they are saying before you fully understand what they said.
Develop Relationship Skills
Learn skills like conflict resolution, active listening, and expressing appreciation. These tools improve communication and help maintain intimacy over time. We already recommended negotiation skills, but add problem-solving skills to your list. Read our article on Master the Art of Problem-Solving. Many couples never learned how to develop an improvement plan (Commitment Action Document) or develop SMART goals, so add these two to your list as well.
Final Thoughts
The above may seem like a lot, but it gets worse. That’s because you must go beyond learning the skills to practicing and experiencing them. That’s why it’s important to start this learning as a teenager or young adult because it may take a while to get good at most of this. If you are already married, discuss this article with your spouse and agree on a series of discussions over wine about how you will grow together. Discussions such as these are sexy and stimulating. And don’t forget to be comfortable being uncomfortable because that is how growth happens. Coach Al and Mrs. Dee will launch a podcast to help married couples improve their relationships.
